Miller Research was commissioned in January 2024 by Welsh Government to analyse the responses to the consultation ‘Sustainable Farming Scheme:  keeping farmers farming’.

The consultation ran for 12 weeks from December 2023 to March 2024 and sought views on the Welsh Governments proposed approach to:

  • how farmers will be rewarded for responding to the climate and nature emergencies, as well as producing food in a sustainable way
  • how the scheme meets the objectives of Sustainable Land Management (SLM)
  • support available

Miller Research was able to use their considerable expertise to conduct analysis of responses to this extensive consultation which included seven substantive chapters which were

  • The Sustainable Farming Scheme framework
  • The Sustainable Farming Scheme process
  • Payment methodology
  • Transition Period
  • Basic Payment Scheme
  • Regulations
  • Evidence

The consultation received a total of 12,108 responses which included over 3,000 responses to the 19 consultation questions and over 6,500 unique responses submitted in an alternative format including unique text submitted as a part of a campaign. Miller Research conducted quantitative analysis to eight open text box questions, and qualitative analysis all 19 questions which amounts to over 70,000 units of qualitative data. Miller Research provided a “summary of responses” report which is available here: Sustainable Farming Scheme
