Environment, rural and farming
As a rurally based business, Miller Research understands the challenges and opportunities that face rural communities in retaining services, enabling diversification, maximising its use of its assets and stimulating local economic development. Read moreHow we work
Our work has a strong rural focus; covering the development of rural economies, evaluation of rural development programmes and support for agriculture and tourism in rural areas.
We have undertaken evaluations of rural programmes including extensive work on the Sustainable Farming Scheme for Wales, support for Food Partnerships, and evaluations of rural community energy projects. Our work in rural and agricultural policy has helped to shape the approaches taken to the development of key rural sectors.
We specialise in project development work around the role of artisan food and drink within rural communities, sustainable agriculture and farm diversification, activity tourism and the provision of smart basic services.
Our work has secured substantial amounts of funding being secured for projects in a diverse range of rural communities and local authorities across Wales and England.
Our specific areas of expertise include the following:
Rural Innovation
We work with national, regional, and local bodies to stimulate added value rural activities. We work with innovative projects and interventions within the food and drink and tourism sectors to foster the development of sustainable activities that add to the vibrancy of rural economies.
Evaluation services for agriculture interventions
We work with Welsh Government and UK Government-funded interventions in agriculture aimed at improving agricultural performance and resilience, as well as environmental and commercial sustainability.
Rural Policy
We work with national and local governments to develop rural policy. We bring to the table our holistic way of working, combining approaches that work in combination to support the environment, the rural economy, local communities, and the Welsh language.
Miller Research is committed to developing a vibrant and resilient rural economy alongside protecting nature and the characteristics that make rural communities special. We promote our holistic way of working, and work closely with clients and partners to promote mutual benefits for all rural sectors.
We are proud to be a certified B Corp organisation. Our certification recognises our commitment to the highest standards of performance, accountability, and transparency in environmental, social and governance practices. Our associated businesses in organic sheep production, rural tourism and latterly wine production ensure we understand some of the issues facing rural farming communities.
